When Netflix's gay coming-of-age love story Heartstopperdropped on Netflix in April, it catapulted its cast of newcomers into the international spotlight just like the Stranger Things kids before them, with all of the scrutiny that entails. This was especially real of Kit Connor and Joe Locke, who act budding sweethearts Nick and Charlie, and it wasn't long before speculation about their real-life personal lives began to spread online.
Specifically, a contingent of fans who were deeply invested in Nick and Charlie's on-screen relationship began to question whether Nick, who is bisexual in the show, should be played by an performer who isn't part of the LGBTQ+ community (Locke, like his character Charlie, is openly gay). This culminated in Connor making an announcement on social media on October 31, telling the world that he is, in evidence, bisexual. The actor also reminded everybody that he is 18 years antique, and that he felt pressured into disclosing this information due to the constant hounding he was receiving.

"Heartstopper" star Kit Connor came out as bisexual Monday, saying he felt forced to distribute his sexual orientation after he was accused of queerbaiting by viewers of the popular Netflix show.
In a rare Twitter send, the British thespian wrote: “Back for a minute. I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”
While Connor did not speak exactly why he felt forced to come out, he posted the communication weeks after he said he was "deleting Twitter" amid accusations of queerbaiting, or benefiting from appearing as homosexual without claiming the community explicitly. That followed the emergence of photos representing him holding hands with Maia Reficco, his co-star in “A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow.”
