Cowboy gay men
Gay Themes
Bill_san_Antonio (Bill san Antonio) 1
There was some discussion about lgbtq+ themes in Adios Sabata on the SWWB a while ago. Personally I’m not sure what to think about this clip except that Yul Brunner and some other guys wear costumes out of Village People’s wardrobe. ;D
But I came to reflect other spaghetti westerns with obvious gay characters. The most obvious is of course the gay cowboy gang in Django Kill! Also Nino Castelnuovo in Massacre Time and my favorite gay couple in sw’s: George Hilton and Klaus Kinski who contain very twisted relationship in Ruthless Four. Some own even suggested that there’s something sexual between Nino and El Chuncho in Bullet for the General.
There must be others too but can’t remember more right now. What accomplish you think of the subject? Why did they include so many male lover themes in spaghetti westerns?

I don’t consider they were being deliberately gay (apart from Django kill of course). I think the costumes only appear gay retrospectively 30-40 years later. I imply, look at what average people were wearing in the 60’s and 70’s! William Bergers hideous emerald crushed velvet suit in Sartana would not contain raised many eyeb

Description: The Gay Ranchero is a 1948 American Western film starring Roy Rogers that was filmed in Wildwood Regional Park in Thousand Oaks, California, and despite its campy title, is one of the more action-packed Roy Rogers movies. The story follows criminal Vance Brados as he seeks to grab over the profitable Mazanita Springs Spa and Airline, and uses sabotage and murder to make it happen. Sheriff Roy Rogers steps in to endeavor to stop the sabotage of the planes. Aided by Nicci Lopez, Roy sets up a trap to try to seize Vance and his gang, but things get complicated when Vance becomes suspicious.

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in a scene from Brokeback Mountain.
Ask anyone who’s seen BrokebackMountain(2005) to characterize the film in three words, and you’re almost certain to hear some variation of “gay cowboy love-story.” While many have lauded the film, directed by Ang Lee, for its nuanced portrayal of two men’s complicated desire for each other, the film was subject to scathing criticism at the time of its release. Detractors, largely spearheaded by right-wing and religious groups, quickly and fervently deemed the film’s depiction of a homosexual couple immoral, evidence of an attempt to feminize men, and even anti-American. In many cases, critics honed in on the two leads ’ occupations as cowboys, challenging the universe of a “gay cowboy” in American history. One critic wrote that the film was a
That is why we notice so much value in the work of photographer Luke Gilford. For “National Anthem,” his collection of images on display at Manhattan’s SN37 Gallery, Gilford photographed participants in the International Gay Rodeo Association. Many of his subjects have fought for decades to be seen as legitimate riders in the rodeo world, bringing their rural sensibilities and queerness to arenas across the country.
As scholars of gender, sexuality and the American West, we have spent years studying gay rodeoers. Through the Gay Rodeo Oral History Project and other research, we’ve been able to highlight the experiences of Gilford’s subjects and reveal the complexities of rural America.
We realize that queer people own always belonged in rural places and have always participated in rural traditions. And we hope that the unashamed presentation of queer, rural rodeoers refutes the lazy dichotomy of the urban queer evolving versus the rural homophobic conservative.
The fantasy of the straight, white cowboy
The cowboy has long stood as a symbol of American values and virile masculinity. But this understanding of the cowboy hides a more complex reality. Cowboys were once the outca

Bisexual shepherds, close enough.
The mythos of the American Old West, with its aura of ruggedness, danger and adventure, has appealed to many people over the years, including gay men. While they don't have quite as many stereotypical male lover associations as sailors and leather-clad bikers, cowboys are nevertheless an important part of macho lgbtq+ male iconography.
It's more about the look and sense of the cowboy than the knowledge, so these men can be launch in The Untamed West, but also in a Vacuum Western, Cattle Punk, New Old West, Samurai Cowboy, or any other cowboy-flavored work.
This trope covers gay or bisexual men who are Western-flavored characters (ranchers, cattle hands, rodeo performer, and country singers) or just fans of the genre.
This is almost always a flavor of Manly Gay.
