All the gay ships

Plot twist! They weren’t quite sent to super hell for being gay.

While we gays are finally getting more of a look-in with TV and clip (and games!), the amount of actually, openly, canonically gay content out there is a fraction of what it so easily could be. There are some glaringly obvious examples of characters and twosomes where, in better circumstances, we could have so easily had some gorgeous gay, lesbian, and bi representation play out on screen. Often a lot of the backlash against these couples being actualised on screen is, perhaps obviously, down to homophobia – either overtly or more subtly. We’ll skip over the discussion of the overt homophobia for now, because I ponder that if you’re reading this, you’re going to be familiar with the idea “gay = bad”.

A lot of the more subtle homophobia in media rep stems from erasure and excuses. For example, there is this pervasive suggestion that intimacy between women is somehow devoid of romantic or sexual notions, because that’s just “how women are”: observe also the erasure of lesbianism through the queerbaiting “gal pals” trope. It leads to the total erasure and

We all love a fine scripted romance in our TV shows and movies, and get excited when our favorite celebrities discover love in real experience. But fanfiction has always helped us imagine cherish stories between characters that might not actually fetch together in the chat of the original perform. Often these fanfictions naturally venture into queer area, possibly because homosexual relationships are underrepresented in fiction. Much has been written about the most famous fanfic gay/lesbian ships in popular culture, and certainly the practice of homosexual shipping is alive and well (just check out Shipping Wiki for a treasure trove).

Of course, no ship is complete without a portmanteau: a blending of their names. So we’ve included those, of course. Here are some of our fave (fake?) couples!

Boy wizard himself falling in love with his nemesis, Draco Malfoy? That’s a slash ship we can get behind. “Drarry” is a fanfic favorite ship from the series, and it is somewhat explored through other means in the play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. If these two got together, it would follow the popular enemies-to-lovers trope in romance. But these characters do build sense together: both

I just watched season 4 of Big Mouth, and while I do contain thoughts on it, this really stuck in my craw. I’m sure I’m going to get some flack for this but, Aiden is a really bad character. Aiden has been in the demonstrate for two seasons, and he has less character than Lump, a background character. Hell, Milk was in FOUR EPISODES and has a more defined personality than Aiden. We haven’t even met Aiden’s Jesse that he mentioned when he met Matthew, the only friend he’s ever mentioned having. About the only thing I learned about Aiden this season was that Aiden seemed to look down his nose at Matthew’s sense of humor at the two pools they go to. But aside from that, Aiden’s just this flat perfect guy with nothing interesting. Aiden is just Blaine from Glee. He has no dreams, no motivations, no personal problems, no academy drama, no friends of his own, no baggage, no insecurities. Aiden exists to be Matthew’s crush. And he kind of sucks. Aiden is not a classmate. He’s not like Jay or even Devon. He’s not going to change or mature. And that upsets me. I don’t want to see Matthew get his heart broken, but every other character has had multiple love interests, diverse crus
