I was a newly minted 21-year-old, back home for Christmas break. Seattle’s gayest neighborhood, Capitol Hill, has a handful of bars and clubs within walking distance of one another, and so the gay revelry pours out onto the streets. Some people are stumbling to the next bar and others are just milling around for a smoke break.

And it was on these damp streets where I was approached by this guy: average height, bleached blonde hair, a beer gut, and really shrill.

“Hey, you’re cute — for an Asian.”

“Thanks… But actually that’s kind of racist… and really offensive to appreciate a billion people.” Actually it was more enjoy 4 billion, but numbers have never been my strong suit.

“It’s not racist. I’m just telling it like it is, honey.”

1. Yes, your preferences are racist

The most striking part about anti-Asian racism is that it often doesn’t even register as racism. Let’s, for a m

Savage Love: Why Are White Gay Guys So Racist Toward Asian Men?

I’m taking a week off, so this week’s “Savage Love” is a reprint of a column that was originally published on Jan. 13, 2016. I hope everyone has a happy and safe Identity festival. Please be careful out there. —Dan

As a queer man of color—I’m Asian—I feel wounded whenever I am exposed to gay men in Fresh York City, Toronto or any city where ivory gay men dominate. Homosexual men, mostly whites and Asians, reject me because of my race, and no one admits to their sexual racism. I understand that sexual attraction is subconscious for many people. But it is unfair for a homosexual Asian like myself to be constantly marginalized and rejected. I fight for gay rights, too. I believe in equality, too. I had the identical pain of being lgbtq+ in high school and the same fears when coming out, too.

Why is there no acceptance, no space, no welcome for me in this white-painted gay community? I’m 6 foot 1, 160 pounds, fit and very good-looking. What can I do? I might as well be a sexless monk.

LGBTQ Asian Americans seen as more ‘American’

The fastest-growing racial group in the United States — Asian Americans — is also one that is consistently perceived as “foreign.”

But for Asian Americans who are gay or homosexual woman, their sexual orientation may make them seem more “American” than those who are presumed straight. A new University of Washington study, the latest in research to examine stereotypes, identity and ideas about who is “American,” focuses on how sexual orientation and race come together to influence others’ perceptions.

“Research on race is often separate from research on sexual orientation. Here we bring the two together to understand how they interact to influence decisions of how American someone is considered,” said Sapna Cheryan, a UW associate professor of psychology.

Cheryan in 2017 authored a relatedstudy, which showed how stereotypically American traits, such as being overweight, made Asian Americans seem more “American.” The new research by Cheryan and her students, a collection of four studies, was published June 27 in Social Psycholog

Chinese Australians call out racism on LGBT dating apps amid Sydney Mardi Gras celebrations

Rilun Li says racist phrases like "sorry, not into Asians" on gay dating app profiles make him undergo uncomfortable.

The 27-year-old moved from China to Australia more than eight years ago, hoping to initiate a new animation in "this amiable country".

But despite the time that has passed, he still feels marginalised in the LGBT community because of his race.

"I feel I am an outsider," he said.

LGBT Chinese Australians

These Chinese Australians battled shame, stigma and disbelief when they came out to their parents. But now, they've gained some fierce LGBT allies.

As the annual Mardi Gras celebrations take place in Sydney this weekend, Mr Li is speaking out about his experiences.

They ranged from a particularly "humiliating" incident a few years ago at a nightclub to the racist language he's seeing on gay matchmaking app apps.

"I was pushed and [someone] yelled: 'f***ing Asians'," he said.

"I had done nothing wrong and couldn't understand why I was treated like a shit."
