Denzel Washington says his gay kiss in 'Gladiator II' was cut, thinks filmmakers 'got chicken'

“Gladiator II” is set to release next week, bringing audiences the glory and gore of the Roman Empire: Swords will be unsheathed in this blockbuster sequel and heroes will rise — and perhaps share a kiss?

Actor Denzel Washington told Gayety that he had a kiss in the movie but that it was ultimately cut from the final print.

“I actually kissed the male in the clip, but they took it, they trim it. I reflect they got chicken,” Washington, who plays a Roman businessman in the motion picture, said in a video interview. “I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet.”

“I killed him about five minutes later,” he added with a snicker. “It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the kiss of death.”

It appears that it wasn’t the only kiss that was cut from the Ridley Scott-directed film.

Actor Paul Mescal told Entertainment Weekly about a moment with co-star Pedro Pascal: “There was a moment when we were rehearsing my fight scene with Pedro, and I had an idea towards the end of the scene to smooch Pedro on the forehead.”

“I did it in one of the takes, and then we’re getting

Denzel Washington Says His Gay Smooch Was Cut From Gladiator II

Gladiator 2 arrives in theaters this weekend, and if you were hoping to see Denzel Washington’s character kiss a man, well I’ve got bad news for you. While that scene was apparently filmed, it was cut because, according to Washington, the people in charged chickened out.

The original Gladiator was released all the way back in 2000 and became a massive smash for director Ridley Scott. It starred Russel Crowe as Maximus, a influential Roman general who is betrayed, made a slave, and forced to combat in the gladiator arena. The sequel stars Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus, the son of Maximus, who finds himself in a similar situation. The movie also stars Denzel Washington as Macrinus, a former slave looking to take over Rome, and according to returning director Scott, the character was supposed to contain a “twinkle” of bisexuality. However, one scene showing this part of the character has seemingly been cut.

In a recent interview with Gayety, Washington sat down to chat about just how gay the Roman Empire is in the new historical epic. That’s when the Equalizer actor revealed the deleted gay kiss.

Source Reveals Why Denzel Washington's Gay Kiss Was Slice From 'Gladiator II'
A show insider opened up about the decision to chop Denzel Washington‘s same-sex smooch from Gladiator II.

Earlier this week, the 69-year-old performer revealed that he had filmed a scene where he kissed another dude for the sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winner. The scene did not build it to the ultimate cut of the movie.

He joked that the studio was too “chicken” to keep the moment in. However, according to someone involved with the movie that was not the case.

The insider told TMZ that the brush was never actually a part of the script and was instead an improvised moment. There were reportedly many takes of the scene with distinct improvised elements.

As for why the kiss was not included, they alleged that it was due to “a story choice,” adding that the decision was made without “prejudice.”

Denzel Washington filmed male lover kissing scene for ‘Gladiator II’ — but ‘chicken’ filmmakers cut it

“Gladiator II” nearly had it all: epic battle scenes, burdensome doses of nostalgia, passionate monologues and even an unexpected gay kiss — until filmmakers cut the latter.

Denzel Washington revealed in an interview with Gayety that his kissing scene with another male actor was not included in the final edit of the movie, which hits theaters on Nov. 22.

“I actually kissed the man in the film, but they took it, they chop it. I think they got chicken,” Washington, who plays a presumed pansexual Roman businessman, told the outlet.

“I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet,” he surmised.

However, the Oscar winner, 69, noted that it was not necessarily a romantic moment for the power-hungry arms dealer.

“I killed him about five minutes later,” he said with a giggle. “It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the kiss of death.”

It turns out, that wasn’t the only kiss cut from the final product.

Paul Mescal, who plays protagonist Lucius, told Entertainment Weekly he took a bit of creative liberty while filming a fight

Denzel Washington recently spilled on a same-sex kiss scene he filmed for “Gladiator II” that won’t construct it to the great screen this month.

“I actually kissed a man in the film, but they took it out, they cut it, I reflect they got chicken,” said the actor, who plays Macrinus in the “Gladiator” sequel, in an interview with Gayety’s Caitlynn McDaniel.

Washington, who was asked “how gay” the Roman Empire is, told McDaniel that the smooch was “full on the lips.”

“And I guess they weren’t ready for that yet,” he continued.

“I killed him about five minutes later. It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the peck of death.”

“Gladiator II” director Ridley Scott, in an interview with The New York Times published last week, described Washington’s character as having both a “twinkle” of bisexuality and being a “gangster.”

The film marks a reunion of sorts for Scott and Washington, who previously worked together on Scott’s 2007 film “American Gangster.”

Scott told the Times that Washington is “always fractious” in his latest film.

“That’s who he is: Denzel, in a comical kind of way, is a Method actor,” he said.

“When he’s doing a part, he’s in the part all the moment, so it isn’t D
