Sex and the City alum Cynthia Nixon was profiled in the New York Times over the weekend, and the out-and-proud actress’ comments about her sexuality being a choice are drawing the ire of some critics within the LGBT activist community.

Here’s the (regrettably lengthy) section in question:

“I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ‘I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and lgbtq+ is better.’ And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me. A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it’s a choice, then we could opt out. I'm one of fourteen Americans who has never watched an entire episode of "Sex and the City." The high heels and extreme grooming, the squealing girl talk, the pursuit of men-booooring. Give me a rerun of The Wire any day.

So I had to be brought up to cultural speed when Cynthia Nixon, who played the show's sexy lawyer Miranda, made a little splash in The New York Times Magazine this past weekend by saying that, for her, being gay is a choice. Of course, the preferred LGBT movement line is that we were all "born this way"-and so her comments sent the Maoist portions of the LGBT idea police into an irate buzzing fury. Here's the relevant article, which is long because it is extremely thoughtful:

Cynthia Nixon: Gay by Choice?

Cynthia Nixon stands by her statement that she is gay by choice, despite the backlash she's received from members of the gay community.

The "Sex and the City" actor recently clarified remarks she made during a speech to a gay audience in which she declared, "I've been straight and I've been gay, and gay is better."

The remark caused a stir in the lesbian, gay, bi and transgender community. Nixon told last Sunday's  Brand-new York Times magazine that she was pressured to change what she said, "because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice.

"For me, it is a choice," Nixon told the Times. "I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me."

Nixon, 45, is engaged to her long-time partner Christine Marinoni, who gave birth last February to their son, Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni.

"I also experience like people ponder I was walking around in a cloud and didn't realize I was gay, which I find really offensive," she told the Times. "I uncover it offensive to me, but I also find it offensiv

Cynthia Nixon: I'm gay by choice

Former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon is holding firm to her statement that she has chosen to be homosexual, although her comments hold sparked controversy in the gay and lesbian community.

"For me, it is a choice," Nixon says in a New York Times Magazine profile. "I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me."

Her statement hasn't gone over well with gay activists. Writing in AMERICAblog Gay, John Aravosis says that Nixon, who had a long bond with a man that produced two children before coming out as queer in 2004, is actually bisexual. "She needs to learn how to select her words better, because she just fell into a right-wing trap, willingly," he writes, "When the religious right says it's a choice, they signify you quite literally pick your sexual orientation, you can change it at will, and that's bull."

He went on to utter, "Every religious right hatemonger is now going to quote this woman every single time they long for to deny us our civil rights."

When Cynthia Nixon, best established for her role as Miranda in Sex and the City, sat down with Alex Witchel of the New York Times last month, she managed to both wrath the LGBT society and give fodder for the intolerant and the homophobic. In commenting on her romantic experience, the actress said, “I’ve been direct and I’ve been gay, and same-sex attracted is better.”

Since 2004, Nixon has been in a connection with Christine Marinoni. The couple had a child, Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni, with the help of a sperm donor last year. This relationship came a year after she split with her former partner, Daniel Mozes, with whom she conceived two children.
