Not long before he was killed, XXXTentacion foresaw imminent death as a real possibility and mused about his legacy.

"Worst thing comes to worse, I f—king die a tragic death or some s—t and I'm not able to see out my dreams, I at least want to recognize that the kids perceived my message and were able to make something of themselves and use it to turn it into something positive, and to at least have a good life," the 20-year-old rapper said in a recent Instagram livestream. "If I'm going to cease or ever be a sacrifice I want to make sure that my life made at least 5 million kids elated, or they found some sort of answers or resolve in my life."

On Monday, XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Wayne Onfroy, was shot by an assailant in a red mask as he was leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach, Fla., and pronounced lifeless at a nearby hospital at 5:30 p.m. local time. A vigil was planned for Tuesday evening outside the motorcycle shop.

His Legacy Lives On: SKINS by XXXTentacion

In June of 2018 a rumor circulated that rapper XXXTentacion, aka Jahseh Onfroy, who had been killed by a robber at the age of 20, was still alive. When an designer this influential, versatile, and successful dies an untimely death (think of Tupac Shakur and Elvis Presley) it’s perhaps not surprising that such conspiracy theories might arise. But XXXTentacion’s legacy was different, as he accumulated a very powerful fan base after releasing only two albums and being mainstream for barely a year before his death.

On Dec.10, 2018, his first posthumous album, SKINS, was released. Although the album is only 10 tracks and 19 minutes long, he managed to combine the sounds of punk, rock, emo, and hip hop all into one. These versatile sounds led to a new form of rap for younger youth, called “SoundCloud rap,” which has since inspired rappers like Lil pump, Smokepurpp, Ski Mask the Slump God, Fat Nick, and many more. This build of rap is controversial within the hip hop community, but no one can argue that these rappers have a unique bond with their fan base. SKINS sold 129,000 units in its first week and reached number one on the Billboard

In this op-ed, Najma Sharif explains why we shouldn't mythologize artists who are alleged abusers after their death.

My neighborhood coffee shop was quietly playing “Sad!” by XXXTentacion as I sat down to write this. In this track’s lyrics, the rapper deploys a recognizable technique of abusers — threatening self harm should his partner leave him. XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Onfroy, was fatally shot in his hometown of Deerfield Beach, Florida, on June 18. In light of this news, it was jarring to notice his voice. I asked the barista I see most mornings what she thought about XXXTentacion, but she said she didn’t really think of him. She said she liked the harmony and didn’t remunerate attention to anything else. But there's a lot else to consider. After his death, the Internet was split into three camps: fans who mourned, “objective” critics, and those who felt worse for the woman he allegedly abused than they did that he died.

In 2016, Onfroy was charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant chick, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering, according to the official charges obtained by Pitchfork. In a deposition related to these charges, Pitchfor

XXXTentacion Discusses His History of Violence & Why He’s Against Feminism in New Interview

XXXTentacion, the burgeoning SoundCloud rapper whose criminal history is closely intertwined with his musical legacy, was catapulted into the public stratosphere nearly two years after his “Look at Me!” track was released online. The two-minute-thirty-second clip went live December 31, 2015. By April 22, 2017, it had peaked at No. 34 on the BillboardHot 100.

But the rapper, born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, has prompted fans to “stop believing the rumors” of the heinous abuse charges filed against him by his ex-girlfriend. In an interview with the Miami New Times published Tuesday (June 5), Onfroy speaks to his tenuous yet tight-knit partnership with his mother, creature against feminism but all here for astral projection, and other factors from his earlier life that have shaped who he is today.

“Women may see or feel that they’re belittled, but you’re only belittled if you want to be belittled,” he argues about feminism. But the #MeToo movement has climactically revolutionized how much power women are allotted once they publi

Why We Shouldn’t Be Done Talking About XXXTentacion

Content warning: This article contains mentions of violence and sexual assault.

“This [     ] did some gay shit, so I had to crack his leader open,” explained XXXTentacion to his mother, regarding his beating of a cellmate. That year, when he was 17, X’s arrest register included possession of a gun, armed robbery, resisting arrest, and possession of unprescribed Xanax. He was still relatively unknown at this point in his life. By the time he caught the public eye at 19, his record included even more extreme brutality. He dragged a barbecue cleaner along the inside of his girlfriend’s thigh. He assaulted fans. Through it all, he showed not a trace of remorse. Amidst this horror he signed a Capitol Tape deal worth $6 million.

X’s violence was never a confidential. Nonetheless, millions chose to defend him. They attacked his victims and claimed his music—rife with misogyny and hostility itself—so overshadowed his crimes that the latter were forgivable. Most disturbingly, many of these fans and supporters are teenagers themselves.

Music, among other forms of entertainment, is packed of stars with dubious morals. If the crimes of Tupac xxxtentacion beat up gay perosn
