Beyond the binary: 6 LGBTQ+ gynecology myths
For members of the LGBTQ+ community, medical environments can often feel exclusive. However, regardless of your sexuality or gender identity, gynecological issues remain important to address.
Tryon Medical Partners gynecology and sexual health specialist Dr. Erin Stone is here to assist debunk some shared myths about visiting the gynecologist as a lesbian, same-sex attracted, bisexual, transgender or questioning individual.
MYTH #1: The gynecologist is for cisgender and straight people.
FACT: Historically, gynecology has been focused on nurture for cisgender, vertical women. However, the field of gynecology is quickly refocusing on patients who identify outside of those categories. Dr. Stone notes that although there is still room for progress, gynecologists and gynecology as a field are productive to be more inclusive of every kind of patient who needs gynecology care.

Knowing your client’s or patient’s sexual orientation and gender identity is crucial to helping you create a welcoming environment where all patients perceive safe and respected. In order to do that, you must first acknowledge what these terms imply and how to utilize them respectfully. You’ll scout terminology associated with Diverse communities, including the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation; practice using pronouns and gender-neutral language; and develop a move for when you mess up. In this fully online, self-guided, interactive session, you will be introduced to foundational information you’ll need to succeed in the rest of this course and ultimately initiate effectively and respectfully treating your LGBTQ+ clients or patients.

Session 2: Root Causes of Health Disparities

Gynecological Treatments
Contraception Management
If you or your spouse do not long for to become pregnant, a Duke ob-gyn can help you decide which contraception methods are right for you. Transsexual men taking testosterone can get pregnant if they include a uterus and ovaries. Transgender women who haven’t had a vasectomy or orchiectomy can gain their partner pregnant through vaginal sex.
STI Testing and Treatment
Sexually transmitted infections are spread through sexual contact and should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. If you are at lofty risk for HIV, infectious disease providers in our specialized pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) clinic prescribe therapy to prevent infection if you are exposed to the virus.
Abnormal Bleeding
We provide evaluation and treatment of abnormal bleeding and can aid in complete menstrual suppression if that is your goal.
Annual Well Visits and Preventative Screening
We carry out annual well visits and offer preventive cancer screening tests.
Pelvic Exam

When Hannah Locke, MD joined the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as an assistant professor in 2019, she was clear with the department on what she wanted her clinical focus to be.
“I walked into this job saying I need to do LGBTQ nurture here, and they said, ‘cool, do that,’” Locke said. “They just really supported me with seeking that as much as I want to. They really foster the faculty’s passions.”
Locke is a general OB-GYN for Indiana University Health and IU Academy of Medicine, but has a special interest in LGBTQ care. She sees patients at the IU Health Coleman Center as well as at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Health Transgender Clinic.
“For me personally, I am a queer person,” Locke said. “I'm married to a woman, and it has been so incredibly valuable for me to own a job where I am giving back to my personal community.
