YOUTH EVENTS
Our overnight and day-long events build resiliency and direction skills. These include youth-led training on identity, social justice/oppression, healthy relationships, political and advocacy education, social networking, and peer helping skills.
SUPPORT GROUPS
We hold two, bi-monthly virtual support groups for youth and for adults. These groups provide participants with community and peer support, navigation to services and education on LGBTQ+ history and culture.
GSA CLUB SUPPORT
We support GSA Clubs through in-person visits, providing resources and offering assistance to clubs on topics from starting a GSA, to meeting topics, and how to accept your GSA to the next level.
COMMUNITY AND FAMILY TRAINING
We provide training for school staff, counselors, and community members on how to be supportive and inclusive of LGBTQ+ youth.
THERAPY AND CASE NAVIGATION SERVICES
We provide outpatient therapy and case navigation to Gay individuals of all ages.
Prevention and Protection
College student Owen Markson Belt was in middle school when he first realized he was transgender. He doesn’t retain a lot from that period of his existence, but he does recall one thing.
“It was a little tough for those around me to adapt to me being male,” he tells SFR in an email.
During his senior year of high educational facility in December 2020, Markson Belt and his family moved from Missouri to New Mexico, and he spent the year teaching online through Santa Fe Public Schools. Despite the lack of connection with other students, he says the change in environment “helped me feel more at ease attending classes.”
The SFPS Office of Learner Wellness also helped smooth his transition. Before he began attending classes, Markson Belt and his parents met with the department’s prevention coordinator to argue how to best help him as a transgender student, otherwise known as the district’s Gender Sustain Process.
“Without my parents, I don’t think I would have known about the gender support plan,” Markson Belt says. “It allowed me to go by my current name and gender without any of the teachers or fellow students knowing my prior name. It was a major relief coming from a

Casa Q
Casa Q’s mission is to provide secure living options and services for lesbian, gay, pansexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth and allies, ages 14 to 22, who are at uncertainty of or experiencing homelessness. Unlike emergency shelter programs, Casa Q provides residential and transitional living services in a home-like environment, complemented with comprehensive and individual case management.
Casa Q has served over 85 Homosexual youth and their families, since opening our doors in February 2015. Our residential program serves young people ages 14-18, and our Aftercare and Transitional Living Programs (TLP) support young adults ages 18-22 who hold aged out of the Casa Q house, or who were referred to us and are now living on their own. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically increased the need to ensure LGBTQ+ young people ages 14-22 have housing, access to mental health services, and solid support systems. There is very limited housing for homeless teens in our community, and Casa Q is the only LBGTQ+ specific homeless shelter in the entire state of New Mexico.
