The man accused of breaking into US politician Nancy Pelosi's home and attacking her husband with a hammer was motivated by conspiracy theories, his lawyer has said as his trial begins.

David DePape believed Mrs Pelosi was part of a plot to "manipulate the country" and "steal votes from Donald Trump", a court in San Francisco heard.

He faces two federal charges, including attempted kidnapping of a federal official.

Mr DePape, 43, has pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for the attempted kidnapping charge and 30 years in prison for assault on a federal official's family member.

After the attack, Paul Pelosi spent six days in hospital with a fractured skull.

During opening arguments on Thursday, Mr DePape's defence conceded that their client attacked Mr Pelosi in his quest to identify the California congresswoman.

Paul Pelosi, the husband of US Residence of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked by a hammer-wielding intruder at the couple's San Francisco home in the adv hours of Friday.

Within hours of the attack, a series of unsubstantiated claims began circulating in fringe far-right circles that contradicted the official police account of how the charge unfolded.

Those misleading claims possess since gone viral after being amplified by modern Twitter chief Elon Musk and a number of conservative influencers.

BBC News examines some of the claims about the attack.

    False same-sex affair claims

One of the most viral fake claims about the invade suggests that Mr Pelosi, 82, and his attacker David DePape, 42, were in a same-sex connection and had a drunken quarrel.

A series of baseless assumptions that carry out not match official accounts of the incident hold been used to back the narrative.

These claims started to trend in the US after Elon Musk tweeted an article from a website featuring similar claims to his 112 million fo

Federal agents have charged David DePape, 42, whom local police had identified as the intruder, with assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official with the intent to retaliate against the official on account of the performance of official duties, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, and attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official on account of the production of official duties, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, according to the Department of Justice.

But false claims and innuendos about the attack have flooded social media, adding to a deepening well of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.

Elon Musk, for example, tweeted and then deleted a link to a story on a dubious website that baselessly suggested DePape was a prostitute. The claim then trended on Twitter, according to Ben Collins, who covers disinformation and extremism for NBC.

Donald Trump Jr. also promoted the completely unfounded claim. He posted — and later deleted — a sexually explicit cartoon image on Instagram and included a message that said: “Dear fact checkers this has nothing at all to do with anything going on in the news and simply posting a cartoon of what
