Forty-two percent of LGBTQ adults identify as people of color, including 21 percent who identify as Latino/a, 12 percent as Black, two percent as Asian, and one percent as American Indian and Alaska Native. This is more diverse than the overall U.S. mature person population, which is 60 percent pale. The higher advocacy of people of color in LGBTQ communities is in part related to age. With increasing acceptance of LGBTQ people, younger generations are more likely to be out as LGBTQ. Younger people are also more likely to be of dye, which is the main reason that a large proportion of people of color identify as LGBTQ. From service provision to movement building, there is a need to respond and change to a recent generation in the U.S. that is more diverse than any previous generation in terms of race, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

This final state in the series, LGBT Well-Being at the Intersection of Race, uses facts from the 2012-2017 Gallup Survey and the Generations/Transpop studies to assess whether LGBT people of color (POC) differ from White LGBT people on several areas of health and socioeconomic well-being. We find that more LGBT people of color notify economic instability compared to White LGBT people on many indicators. Additionally, disparities for POC LGBT adults persist in the health domain, except for measures of depression where more White LGBT adults report having depression compared with POC LGBT adults. Further, more women of color who identify as LGBT reported living in a low-income common, and experiencing unemployment and food insecurity compared to all other groups. We also found differences in outcomes among LGBT POC on some economic and health indicators. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The development in the U.S. LGBT population that Gallup reported earlier this year is reflected across the nation's largest U.S. racial and ethnic groups. Non-Hispanic Shadowy , Non-Hispanic White, and Hispanic adults in the U.S. are all more likely today to identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or something other than heterosexual than they were in 2012, when Gallup began measuring LGBT identification.
The growth has been greater among Hispanic adults than among White or Ebony adults, with Hispanic LGBT identification surpassing 8% in 2020 and reaching double digits in 2021. By contrast, just over 6% of White and Ebony adults identify as LGBT in the latest estimates.

The overlap of a person’s ethnicity and their sexual identity can have a profound impact on how their encounter of public services. The collection of information on the size of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Questioning (LGBTQ) group is relatively new. Fewer than half of the people who participated in the Annual Population survey answered the sexual self question, which was asked in 3 of the 5 waves used to create the 2013 to 2015 dataset.
About 2% of those responding to the question in those years identified as lesbian, same-sex attracted, bisexual or other. There were some differences between ethnic groups in terms of sexual identity, but the very small sample sizes for most ethnicities other than White British means these estimates are somewhat unreliable (for example, the White British sample size was over 209,000, while only around 400 were Mixed White and Asian). This uncertainty needs to be considered when drawing any conclusions from the data.

The worldwide LGBTQI+ population by country reports estimate that approximately eight percent of the world identifies as homosexual, bisexual, or pansexual. Approximately 80 percent of the world identifies as heterosexual, and the remaining 12 percent of the world do not report how they detect. This data is as recent as 2021.
