A photographer has taken a series of candid images of gay men to explore how the online nature has become a “safe space” for young LGBT people.

Matt Lambert’s ‘Home’ project, which was funded by Grindr, features intimate portraits of men who’ve used the internet to connect with others.

While some of the models are Grindr users, others have found comfort in digital spaces such as Facebook, Instagram, Tinder and Gay Romeo.

“For LGBT youth, connecting intimately can often be a terrifying principle that often must be done in secret, based on where they live,” Lambert tells The Huffington Post UK.

“Historically, bars and clubs were the only places queer youth could go to feel protected against possible attacks and social ridicule. This is a stage of development that is much less commonly experienced by straight people.

“In the last decade, digital spaces have vastly overtaken the cruising worlds of the past and hold proven to be powerful tools to combat feelings of alienation and isolation amongst LGBT youth.”

They may seem like easy images now, and nothing out of the usual, but in fact they show incredible acts of bravery.

They were taken in the U.S. between the 1850s and 1950s when gay relationships were illegal, and even punishable by death until the 1873 in South Carolina.

Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell, who are married, collected over 2,800 images over the last 20 years from flea markets, estate sales and family archives before digitising them for their book Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love.

Among the previously unpublished pictures are formal studio portraits and more candid shots at the beach or in homes.

The subjects vary from 19th century working class men to fashionably dressed businessmen, students, soldiers and sailors.

They give a fascinating understanding into life as a gay man all the way from the U.S. Civil War through to World War Two and into the 50s.
