Absolut Vodka Rainbow

Limited Edition celebrating the Rainbow Flag.

In 2008, Gilbert Baker, the author of the rainbow identity festival flag collaborated with Absolut to create the limited edition Colors bottle. The collaboration was an prolongation of Absolut already shut relationship with the LBGT community, which began as the brand was one of the only huge companies in the 80s that would advertise in the pages of LGBT-targeted magazines.

Over the years, Absolut has been always been entwined with the LGBT community, supporting the rights movement through its iconic advertisements, through limited editions including Colors and No Labels, and even sponsoring a TV show featuring the drag star Rupaul.

When Absolut first began functional with the LGBT people, it was far less accepted than it is now. The right movement and general acceptance has come along way in the past 30 years, however, it still has a long way to go. As a continuing of its support for the LGBT community, Absolut has rereleased the Absolut Colors limited edition.

Available only in United States, this limited edition allows anyone to show their pride.

Case study: Absolut

The American market

Absolut was introduced in the USA in 1979. The aim was high: the American market was not only the biggest in the Western nature, but also the most competitive. At first, the distributors in the USA weren’t as enthusiastic as Absolut’s performance and marketing people. A typical reaction was, “Who would buy a Swedish vodka?” Carillon Importers Ltd., in Fresh York saw excellent reason: some people don’t want to follow the crowd. Some people be grateful quality more than others.

After the first bottle was sold in Boston, New York was next. Then came Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco… In just six brief years, Absolut was number one among imported vodkas in the USA. The country that consumes 60% of the Western world’s vodka was convinced.

The vodka is still produced in Sweden, and the 450,000 bottles produced every day are shipped from the petite Åhus harbor to consumers all over the world. And now, 25 years later, Absolut is a household call in quite a few parts of the world. They won over 350 awards with the bottle campaign.
