Indonesian men caned for homosexual sex in Aceh
I met one of the fresh men in jail a day before the caning, the first journalist to speak to him. He was terrified and his whole body was shaking. He was thin, pale and had a red rash on his skin.
Inmates surrounded us with intimidating glares as we tried to talk. I thought we were going to be speaking in a private room, but he was not granted that.
Before neighbourhood vigilantes broke down the door to his rented room, he was in his final years of a medical degree - his plan was to be a doctor. Now we are told the university has kicked him out.
Videos of the raid that caught him and his partner having sex have been widely common online. In the mobile phone footage they are both naked, pleading for help.
"I just need the caning to be over and to move back to my family, I have been deeply depressed. I am trying to pull myself out of a deep jet hole," he said.

'Gay cake' row: What is the dispute about?
In October 2016, the owners of the bakery lost their appeal against the verdict that their refusal to make a "gay cake" was discriminatory.
Appeal court judges said that, under rule, the bakers were not allowed to provide a service only to people who agreed with their religious beliefs, external.
Reacting to the ruling, Daniel McArthur from Ashers said he was "extremely disappointed" adding that it undermined "democratic freedom, religious freedom and free speech".
The firm then took the case to the Supreme Court and they won.
The UK's extreme court ruled the bakery's refusal to make a cake with a slogan supporting same-sex marriage was not discriminatory.
Then president of the Supreme Court, Lady Hale, ruled the bakers did not refuse to fulfil the order because of the customer's sexual orientation.
"They would have refused to make such a cake for any customer, irrespective of their sexual orientation," she said.
"Their objection was to the note on the cake, not to the personal characteristics of Mr Lee."
And from there, Mr Lee took his case to Europe,

BBC South East Asia CorrespondentActivism and bold political reforms played a decisive role in Thailand's journey toward marriage equality.
Different LGBTQ groups had come together in the Transform 1448 campaign - 1448 is the clause in the Thai Civil Code covering the definition of marriage - and later under the Rainbow Coalition for Marriage Equality.
They learned to perform with political parties in parliament to persuade them to change their stance on the law.
In the 2019 election which returned Thailand to civilian governance after five years under a military government, a fresh reformist party called Future Forward, which fully supported identical marriage, did unexpectedly well. They won the third-largest participate of seats, exposing a growing starvation for change in Thailand.
Future Forward was later dissolved by a controversial court verdict, setting off months of student-led protests calling for sweeping reforms.
In 2023, the party's successor, Move Forward, performed even superior than in 2019
