Movie about a gay guy coming out

“Friendships between gay and vertical guys can be healing and uniquely satisfying for all involved.”   ~ Michael C. LaSala Ph.D., LCSW. Psychology Today.

Gay men have befriended women in media for decades. Today I’m looking at films focused on friendships between gay and straight men. Most are mediocre. A few are downright unpleasant. But there are some gems.

The following reviews hold mild spoilers

Coming of Age

Date and Switch (2014). Dopey straight Michael and vulgar gay Matty seek dates for prom (despite clearly pushing 30). Matty doesn’t like guys who behave “too gay” so he starts dating a masc-for-masc jerk. Michael feels abandoned and spends the linger of the movie moping. The film thinks these oafs are hilarious. Your mileage may vary. Wastes the talents of a strong supporting cast. C-

Heartstone (2016). Surly Icelandic teen copes with crushes, bullies, and an unhappy family. His sole defender is his gay finest friend who’s fallen in love with him. The gay friend is compassionate but he’s there to suffer and further the straight boy’s journey. The slow pace, thin plot and relentless gloom create this one hard to sit through. Contains tr

Trying to find a feel-good "gay" movie to monitor is like playing a game of Russian Roulette with your soul, and I think that's shitty: There's a difference between a "gay drama", an "important gay movie", a "gay romance", and a "gay rom-com"... and I'm here to celebrate the latter two!

Every movie in this list is, SPOILER ALERT, guaranteed to close happily, with the two leads living happily-ever-after.

I fond of romance movies, and I'm not apologizing for it! Because sometimes it's crucial to know, when you decide to watch a movie, that the lovable couple you're giddy for isn't going to be shattered by horrible death or separated forever in lonely despair by the time the credits roll.

Alas, in gay cinema, our most-mainstream movie ends with our protagonist sniffing the jacket of a bloke who was tire-ironed to death on the side of a freeway; our most critically-lauded flick ends with our star-crossed lovers hurtling themselves to their

Best LGBTQ+ Coming Out Movies, Ranked

Overall, there are mixed feelings about the principle of coming out — all of which are valid. On the one hand, some watch the notion of coming-out as a product of our heteronormative society, which wishes to further alienate queer people. And on the other, coming out is a necessary form of self-identification and can facilitate alleviate some symptoms of mental illness, like anxiety and depression. At the same time, coming out is luxury that isn't afforded to everyone, depending on one's socioeconomic or geographic location. Love, Simon May Be a Glossy Fantasy, but It’s an Important Step Forward for Gay Representation

This article is part of Outward, Slate’s home for coverage of LGBTQ experience, thought, and tradition. Read more here.

This article contains spoilers for the film Love, Simon.

Love, Simon is many things: an upbeat and charming teen comedy, a leap forward for gay public presence in mainstream movies, and a therapeutic exercise for closeted teens who aspire their parents were as accepting as Simon’s, played poignantly by Jennifer Garner and Fergie’s ex-husband. Kids will like it. Their parents will love it. Who wouldn’t romance it? Maybe woke teens who watch no need for it, but even their sophisticated hearts might melt by the finale. Here is the first major studio production to star a gay teen, a diverse coming-out story with an unapologetic message of inclusion and positivity. So far as I can tell, the only people likely to hate Love, Simon are Fox News hosts and conversion “therapists.” That’s a surefire write of success.

I myself left the feature with a large smile and a light heart. Filing out of the theater with my partner and a bunch of weepy teenagers—the designated crying scenes

10 great British gay films

Few countries can rival the UK when it comes to making great and diverse gay films. This may come as a surprise from a region where male homosexuality was illegal until as recently as 1967, and where gay marriage continues to ruffle right-wingers, swivel-eyed or otherwise. Yet despite their often taboo nature, films with gay characters contain been around since the silent era.

So what key British gay films are out there? We’ve narrowed down the list to films easily available on DVD, although honourable mention must go to the über-rare Two Gentlemen Sharing (1969), a swinging slice of the 60s that hinted at interracial homosexuality. And if you like Vicious (millions seem to), you may get a perverse hit out of Staircase (1969), a dreadful vehicle for Richard Burton and Rex Harrison as two ageing queens in a perpetual state of mutual- and self-loathing.
